About us

History

Compass Church is a church plant of the Brethren Church in Ashland, Ohio. We started as a small group in 2011 and then transitioned to a church in 2016.

The Purpose Of The Church

Glorification of God | Compass exists to bring glory to God. That is not only true of us in a worship service, but it is also true of us in life. Whatever Christians do, they should be able to bring glory to God – in their careers, in their marriages, and in the choices, they make in life. The church was created to bring pleasure to God and bring glory to his name.

Edification of the Church | Compass exists for the edification, or building up, of the saints. That is why we give such a prominent place to Bible study at the church. We have always done that, and we always will do that. And not only does the edification of the saints include Bible study, but it also consists of encouraging one another, building up one another, and serving one another.

Evangelization of humanity | Compass exists for the evangelization of the world, which is really the outgrowth of the first two. As believers are glorifying God and are built up in the church, they evangelize the world and fulfill the Great Commission (see Matthew 28:18–20).

Statement of Beliefs:

The following are the core beliefs of Compass Community Church based on the foundational truths taught in the Bible. All of our teaching and ministry are rooted in and flow out of these biblical doctrines.

Belief about God

There is one eternally existing God who has three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Each distinct person of the Trinity is fully God. He is the creator of all that exists, both visible and invisible, and is therefore worthy of all glory and praise.  God is perfect in love, power, holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom,  justice, and mercy. He is unchangeable and therefore is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Belief about the Scripture (The Bible)

The entire Bible is the inspired Word of God written down by men under the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Bible is the ultimate standard of truth, without error in its original form, and completely sufficient.

Belief about Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the Son of God (second person of the Trinity), who was born of a virgin by the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit. Christ was both fully man and fully God and was completely without sin. It is through Christ’s death on the cross that mankind has the opportunity to be saved from their sin.

Belief about the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit is the third distinct person of the Trinity. The work of the Holy Spirit is to manifest the active presence of God in the world, especially in the church.

Belief about humankind

God created humankind, male and female, for His own glory and in His image. Humans became alienated from God by failing to conform to the moral law of God in action, attitude, and nature (sin). Because humankind’s nature is sinful, it is impossible for humans to come back into the right relationship with God on his/her own.

Belief about Salvation

The death of Jesus Christ on the cross provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sin. Therefore, salvation only occurs when a person willingly repents of their sin and places their faith in Christ as Savior and Lord.
